📋 CASE OVERVIEW

Tyler Robinson is charged with assassinating Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, at a campus event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Prosecutors say a single rifle shot from a rooftop killed Kirk in front of roughly three thousand people. Robinson, a 22-year-old electrical apprentice from southwestern Utah, surrendered within thirty-three hours, after his mother recognized him from an FBI photo and his father, with the help of a youth pastor, persuaded him to turn himself in.

Utah County prosecutors filed seven counts on September 16, 2025, and announced the same day that they would seek the death penalty. The lead charge is aggravated murder, the only count that can carry a death sentence; it otherwise exposes Robinson to twenty-five years to life without parole. According to charging documents, investigators recovered DNA consistent with Robinson's on the rifle and related evidence, along with messages in which he referred to the weapon as his grandfather's rifle. None of it has been tested in front of a judge or jury yet.

Nobody with real access to the evidence has publicly argued Robinson is not the shooter. The fight so far has been almost entirely about process: a prosecutor held in contempt of court for talking to reporters, a battle over cameras in the courtroom, and a fight over whether the witness who took Robinson's statement has to testify in person. Fourth District Judge Tony Graf Jr. is presiding, and Robinson is represented by capital-qualified defense attorney Kathryn Nester. He has not yet been arraigned and has pleaded to nothing.

This week's preliminary hearing, set for July 6 to 10, 2026, is the first time either side has had to show its evidence in open court instead of arguing about who gets to see it. We're not here to tell you Robinson is guilty. We're here to watch whether the system can run a fair capital case in the most politically charged prosecution in a generation. Start with the background report below, then follow along as the hearing unfolds.
