FL v. Chance, Gathright, Murphy & Murphy

Four men stood accused in the death of Charles Jones, the Jacksonville drill rapper known to his fans as Julio Foolio. Isaiah Chance Jr., Sean Gathright, Rashad Murphy, and Davion Murphy were charged in connection with the shooting that killed Jones and wounded three other people in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Tampa North in the early hours of June 23, 2024. The State alleged that the killing was the culmination of a years-long Jacksonville gang war, that the men had tracked Jones from nightclub to nightclub after he posted his birthday plans online, and that three of them opened fire while a fourth helped make the ambush possible. Those were the allegations the State carried into court, and nothing more than allegations until a jury said otherwise.

The trial centered on a single hard question: could the State prove, beyond a reasonable doubt and against each man individually, that this was a coordinated, premeditated execution rather than a looser association a jury might refuse to tie together.
