📋 CASE OVERVIEW

Kianna Davis is on trial in Houston County, Georgia, charged with malice murder and six other counts in the 2020 death of her 2-year-old son, Karter Ambrose. Prosecutors allege that sometime between November 15 and 17, 2020, Karter was beaten with an object, described in the indictment as one "the exact nature of which is unknown," hard enough to lacerate his liver, and that he died of that injury. Davis faces up to life in prison.

The counts against her advance more than one theory at once. Alongside malice murder, felony murder, and cruelty to children, the State charges second-degree murder on the separate theory that Davis failed to seek immediate medical attention after Karter was hurt. A lacerated liver can be survivable with prompt surgery, and prosecutors argue the clock ran out on Karter while the adults responsible for him did nothing.

Two adults were with Karter during the roughly 48 hours he was fatally injured: Davis and her friend Kiyon Devoy Benton, who is charged with the same crimes but will be tried separately, with no trial date yet set for him. That is the fault line of the case. The medical evidence shows a child was beaten, but a torn liver carries no fingerprint and cannot say whose hand delivered the blow, or in which hour across a two-day window. Nearly three years passed before a Houston County grand jury returned an indictment in October 2023; by the time Davis was arrested, she was working as a high school teacher in Buford, on the other side of the state.

We are not here to tell you Kianna Davis is guilty. She is presumed innocent and has pleaded not guilty. We are here to watch whether the State can prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that this defendant is the one responsible, for a child who cannot speak for himself, when a second charged adult and a three-year delay leave room for doubt.
