MI v. Dale Warner

Dale John Warner stood trial in Lenawee County, Michigan, charged with open murder and tampering with evidence in the death of his wife, Dee Ann Warner. The State alleged that on the night of April 24, 2021, after what Dale himself called the worst argument of his life, he killed the 52 year old mother of five. Prosecutors alleged that he then hid her body inside an old anhydrous ammonia fertilizer tank, cut it open, sealed her inside, welded it shut, and painted over the modification to conceal it. That tank sat in a barn on a property Dale owned on Paragon Road, roughly four miles from the family home, tagged do not use, for more than three years. Dee vanished on April 25, 2021, and her remains were not found until August 2024.

The trial centered on a case built almost entirely on circumstantial evidence. There were no eyewitnesses to a killing and no confession. Prosecutors asked the jury to connect the pieces: the timeline of Dee's disappearance, the single letter K text that broke her known habit of long expressive messages, the inconsistencies investigators found in Dale's account of that morning, the digital records from phones and the OnStar system in her Cadillac, and the discovery of her body sealed inside the painted tank. The contested question was whether those pieces, none of them a smoking gun, added up to proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense only had to raise reasonable doubt, and it pressed hard on the three year gap before the body surfaced, on the paint analysis and the qualifications of the State's expert, and on complications in the investigation itself.

The case went to trial, and a jury found Dale Warner guilty. We were not in that courtroom to convict him.
