Tanner Lynn Horner, a contract delivery driver working a FedEx Ground route in rural Wise County, Texas, was charged with capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in the death of seven-year-old Athena Strand. The State alleged that on November 30, 2022, Horner delivered a package to Athena's home in Cottondale, struck her with his van, and then, fearing she would tell her father, forced the girl into the vehicle and killed her. Prosecutors alleged he attempted to break her neck, strangled her, and left her body at a creek crossing near Boyd.
